8 Steps For Comfortable Retirement Living

As your retirement nears, you will need to begin carefully considering just what this will mean for you, your spouse and your family.

As your retirement nears, you will need to begin carefully considering just what this will mean for you, your spouse and your family. Just waiting for the day of your retirement to arrive and then deciding what to do next is dangerous.  Comfortable retirement living requires careful forethought and preparation.

Following are eight steps and suggestions to help you prepare for a comfortable retirement.

1. Discuss your plans for retirement with your spouse and your family. It’s surprising just how often both partners spend years working towards retirement… each with a quite different picture of just what retirement is going to mean someday. All of sudden they find that they will be spending much more time together and will have the opportunity to share much more of your lives with each other.  So, it is vital that you are both in agreement about just how you want to spend your retirement.

It is also often felt that families don’t require to be included in your retirement plans because they’ve normally grown up, have left home and have families and lives of their own. But don’t forget that you spent years bringing your children up and taking care of them.  In retirement you may well find that you will need their help and assistance.

2. Look carefully at your finances. Entering retirement with a mountain of debt and very little income is going to lead to anything but a comfortable retirement. Look carefully at your financial position and start to take steps now, before your retirement, to put your finances in order.

3. Consider your pension entitlement. Read carefully through the Individual Benefit Statement provided from time to time by your employer and see just what benefits you are eligible to receive from your pension plan. It is also a good idea to talk to your employer and to see if there are steps that you can take now to increase your pension benefits.

4. Talk to your spouse about their pension entitlement. If your spouse is entitled to pension benefits, you will need to look at cumulative amount that you will be receiving as a couple.

5. Take a look at your Social Security Statement. If you have questions, make a phone call to the Social Security Administration for assistance.  The Social Security Statement that you receive each year can also help you determine what you can expect to receive as Social Security payments.

6. Many people facing retirement fail to take a look at their life insurance policies. Take the opportunity before your retirement to look at any existing life insurance policies which you have to determine whether or not you have sufficient cover for your spouse and family in the event of your death. Also look at any policies that you have taken out with a view to these policies maturing on or near to your retirement. Your existing policies may qualify you for a nice lump sum to help ease you into retirement.  Be sure that you have sufficient coverage after withdrawing any funds from your policies.

7. Think carefully about what you and your spouse may need in the way of healthcare during retirement and take steps to ensure that you will have adequate coverage when the time comes. For many employees who are covered by an employer’s healthcare policy it can be a considerable shock when it comes to arranging their own health insurance during retirement. The whole area of healthcare needs to be considered carefully.   One area that many people fail to consider is a fee-for-service discount health benefits plan to supplement their Medicare or other insurance.  This type of program usually covers all pre-existing conditions and is inexpensive.

8. If you do not already have a hobby or something to keep you active in your retirement, start now to develop one or two.  Many people really look forward to having the time and resources to spend on a hobby, home based business or some other activity that they have been doing for some time.  Others wait until they actually retire before starting a hobby.  The point is to have something productive to do in retirement so that you keep your mind and physical health in good order.

These are only some of the steps that you need to take to ensure that you move smoothly into a comfortable retirement.  However, these are major consideration that should at least cover the basics and help you have a meaningful and happy retirement.
